What is MYP ?
What the MYP does ?
The Member of Youth Parliament(MYP) represents the Royal Borough at the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) at both regional and naional levels. The UKYP aims to give young people of the UK, between the ages of 11 and 18 a voice which will be heard and listened to by local and central government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people. The MYP is also invited to attend local meetings in order to voice the views and issues of young people to the adult decision makers who can make things change.
MYP in RBWM
Young people from around RBWM have just elected their 5th MYP. The main roles of the MYP are:
- To give the young people in the Borough a representative voice at a local and national level
- To encourage the involvement and discover the issues affecting young people who are socially excluded
- To liase with established groups, such as local youth forums and school councils.
- To be aware of current affairs and be prepared to have a view on topical issues
- To attend the sitting of the UK Youth Parliament
- To attend any local/regional meetings.
- To listen to and respect the views of other young people
- To work on achieving the three manifesto points that they were elected on.
- The MYP will sit on the Youth Opportunity Fund Assessor Panel.
MYP Elections
- In 2006 RMWM had 2,365 votes cast (18.07% turnout - 4th highest in South East - highest in Berkshire)
- In 2007 RBWM had 2,998 votes cast (22.90% turnout - 3rd highest in South East - highest in Berkshire)
- In 2008 RBWM had 3,128 votes cast (23.87% turnout - 3rd highest in South East - highest in Berkshire)
- In 2009 RBWM had 2,915 votes cast (21.75% turnout)
MYP 2009
This year Faisal Shafiq aged 16 from Maidenhead was elected with 46.8% of the vote. Faisals three manifesto points are:
- More inter school activities
- Cheaper/more reliable local transport
- Increase the positive media potral of young people
