Journey Planners

There are plenty of online and telephone based journey planners around to help you work out the best routes and timings for your trip. Some of them even provide real-time information on public transport services. Here are some examples:

  • Traveline website is a national journey planner that allows you to plan your trip by bus, coach or train. You can also contact Traveline by telephone on 0871 200 22 33. They even have a text service, where you can find out the next scheduled bus to call at a particular stop.
  • http://redplanet.travel/ is a national journey planner for door-to-door travel for both public transport and by car journeys. You can also find out departure and arrival times for railway stations and some bus / coach stops.
  • National Rail Enquiries website includes a comprehensive rail planner and has live departure board information, which can be accessed online, by telephone (0871 200 49 50), or text (84950). It also provides information on incidents and planned engineering works that may affect your journey. The Pocket Timetable facility gives you a customised timetable for the stations, times and the days of the week that you want.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead's website contains lots of information on local bus services, including timetables and ticket options. You can also view live information for any bus stop in the Borough that has been fitted with real-time display screens.

There are two rail operators that serve stations in the Borough:

First Great Western operate services on the Great Western Mainline, which links London Paddington with Maidenhead and Reading, and also branch line services between Maidenhead and Marlow, and between Slough and Windsor and Eton Central.

South West Trains website operate services from London Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside, as well as trains serving Ascot.

There are around 200 km (125 miles) of signed cycle routes in the Royal Borough (excluding public rights of way). These are a mix of advisory cycle routes (quiet roads), on-road cycle lanes, shared use footway / cycleway facilities, and dedicated cycle paths. Copies of the Borough's cycle route leaflets are available online as well as from the visitor information centres in Maidenhead and Windsor and from local bike shops.

Female Traveller

Female Traveller was formed to offer a unique reference point on advice for women travelling....

Women make up a significant number of the tourists who explore the United Kingdom and travel abroad each year, but rarely are the specific needs of female travellers addressed in a comprehensive manner. At FemaleTraveller we aim to provide information and advice that will be useful to all women who travel, whether they venture out alone, journey with children, are accompanied by friends or join a tour group for their trips.

From feminine hygiene tips to navigating segregated communities, basic self defence to coping with miscarriage, working abroad to surviving political upheaval, the writers of FemaleTraveller tackle topics that will help keep all female travellers healthy, safe and well prepared for what they might encounter as they travel around the world.
