16-19 Bursaries Explained
The 16-19 Bursary is designed to help young people who face financial hardship, continue in education. It can be used for travel to and from college, for lunch whilst you are attending college and for books and materials necessary to complete your studies.
Bursaries can be applied for through your education provider (school or college) and are on a discretionary basis. This means that each provider may have slightly different criteria than each other to determine how much you will get and how it will be paid to you. They will need information on your household income, whether you receive any benefits and your living status (living alone or with parents etc)
Not everyone who applies for the bursary will automatically be guaranteed to get it. If you are not sure whether you are eligible, it is best to speak to the student finance team at your school/ college.
Young people who are in care, who have recently left care, who receive income support or who have a disability are guaranteed to receive the Bursary under the Governments new scheme. This too can be applied for through your education provider.
